The term ‘kulla’ literally translates as
‘tower’. It refers to a type of housing structure that was common across
northern Albania. Kullas are rectangular houses with no more than three floors.
It combines dwelling, defence and livestock penning in a tower like structure.
In recent years, more and more Kulla has been
renovated as guesthouses. The renovation has retained the traditional elements
of the kulla-s interior that is wooden stairs, floors and ceilings, and
exterior. Particularly, the stonewalls with conspicuous large stones at the
corners of the house are carved with symbols representing natural elements.
