The Gorica
quarter is one of the museum quarters of the town of Berat and it is located on
the opposite side of the River, in front of the Mangalem quarter. The Mangalem
and the Gorica quarters are two characteristic neighborhoods of architecture,
culture and art in Berat. The Gorica quarter was built in the 16th century and
consists of a number of buildings with characteristic balconies, a tower-shaped
house with frescoe-painted walls, the Gorica Bridge and Church of St. Spiridon,
which is located in the center of the quarter.
The inscription on the entrance
of the church dates to 1864. The church is a three-nave basilica with a flat
ceiling. Another interesting building in this quarter is the Gorica castle
which is situated on top of the Gorica hill. The castle is surrounded by wide,
transversally connected walls and towers. Inside the parameter there are ruins
of several rectangular houses with narrow sides that are perpendicular to the
slope of the hill. Even though at first sight the walls of the Gorica tower
seem primitive, the architectural elements are more advanced than those of the
Berat Castle.
