Red Mosque

The Red Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Berat. Dating the mosque is difficult but based on the construction technique used and its location it is believed that the mosque was built during the second half of the 15th century.

The mosque was used by caravans travelling west and later by the Turkish garrisons. All that remains today of the mosque are the ruins of the square-shaped prayer room and white forecourt. A minaret was built on the left side and placement of the minaret differs from other mosques in Berat because of its proximity to the parameter walls. The walls of the mosque were built with the typical Byzantine coisinage technique.
