Permet is located along the river Vjose,
which leads to the Fir of the Hotova National park.
The historical buildings of Permet were
largely destroyed during World War 2. This newly built city is maintained very
green and clean. Unlike other cities in Albania, in Permet rubbish is collected
and properly disposed of. The colorfully painted houses often have birdcages at
their balconies. There are a lot of restaurants and cafes along the promenade
at the Vjose riverside.
The roses planted everywhere in the city gave Permet
the nickname ‘the city of roses’. The city is also known for its good cooking.
Especially for sweets such as ‘gliko’, fine white wine and raki. Gliko is made
with a unique traditional preservational method for green walnut, cherry, fig,
pulm, eggplant, appricot and so on. It is considered as a key for developing
the local economy while protecting biodiversity of the region.
