The Hammam, or Turkish bath, is located in the southwestern part of the castle of Kruja, near the Dollma Tekke. The Dollma tekke is a temple of the Bektashi order which is a sufi branch of the Islamic religion. Before it was destroyed by the communist regime, it hosted 360 holy tombs and occupied an important position in the Bektashi order. Vistors can still feel its sacred atmosphere taking a look at the beautifully painted wall as well as at rooms for rituals and prayers.
The Hammam of Kruja is the oldest hammam in Albania. The hammam consists of four rooms containing two separate bathing facilities which each have a bathing pool. Here you can see all the mechanisms needed for a turkish bath in detail. The roof presents three spherical domes, built in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. There have been two recent restorations of this hammam. In 1966 the hammam was purified from the dirt that had completely covered its roof. Later the floors were paved with gravel.
