Lake Butrint is a salt lagoon at the coast of the Ionian Sea. The lagoon is 16 km2 in size. Marshlands of salt and freshwater characterize the lagoon. The lake shore features dense forests and and a rocky coastline. The Vivari Channel carries water away from the lake to the Ionian Sea. The southern part of the lake belongs to the Butrint National park. Due to its international importance the designated wetland is protected under the Ramsar Convention. Besides the rich flora and fauna it hosts, it is known for its mussel cultivation. Local fishermen set up mussel-beds for this purpose and feed the local kitchen.
